The Graf-Anton-Günther-Schule Oldenburg (colloquially abbreviated as " GAG ") is a grammar school in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony . The school is named after the last Oldenburg Count Anton Günther .

history

Foundation and naming

The school was created as a so-called advanced school , which was set up in the building of the teachers ' college from 1922 during the development of the Evangelical Teachers' College in Oldenburg . The establishment of the advanced school was decided in 1920, the school was opened on April 20, 1922 as Oldenburg's first secondary coeducational school. The naming and the date of foundation thus signal from the beginning the tradition and the claim of the regional high school in the university and science city of Oldenburg to make education and upbringing of boys and girls sustainable and without discrimination of either sex.

In 1938 the Oldenburg Minister of Churches and Schools granted the advanced school the right to use the name "Graf-Anton-Günther-Schule". At that time this name was justified after this person, who was considered a symbol of the Oldenburg regional history, with the fact that the student body of the advanced school "consists of sons and daughters of the old Oldenburg peasantry like no other in the city [Oldenburg]". Research into the naming of the school on the occasion of the school anniversary in 1997 has shown that the long-suspected naming of the secondary school after Count Anton Günther to ward off National Socialist indoctrination can by no means be proven. At that time, the head of the advanced school had already been replaced by the Nazi rulers and put on ideological course. In 1938, everyday school life was shaped through and through by National Socialist rituals (see the literature published by Frank Binternagel in the bibliography).

In the former Prinzenpalais

From 1946 to 1959 the GAG was housed in the Prinzenpalais am Damm and in 1960 moved to the current school building. In contrast to today's school catchment area, which only applies to lower secondary education - as a rule, all pupils in grades 5–10 come from the Oldenburg district communities of Hatten, Hude and Wardenburg - the GAG was open to all pupils who did not live in the city of Oldenburg until 1974 .

A large mosaic on the front of the building next to the main entrance in the south wing and a wrought-iron equestrian statue, critically of ideology, commemorate Count Anton Günther from Oldenburg, who has been venerated as a guarantor of peace during and since the Thirty Years War . In the place of today's wing F there was originally a small gym, the mosaic was removed by a crane before the gym was demolished and then integrated into the wall of the new building, which went into operation in 2004. This had become necessary due to a comprehensive school structure reform in the state of Lower Saxony: As a result of the dissolution of the 30 years of the orientation level in Lower Saxony (grades 5 and 6), more than 700 students were simultaneously in the fifth, sixth and sixth classes on August 1, 2004. seventh grade of the one of the largest secondary schools in Lower Saxony.

Due to the size of the school, the additional teachers it has made possible, numerous cooperations and a profile that goes beyond a broad general education, the school has gradually succeeded since 2004 in developing and implementing an upbringing, education and training concept that is favored by the school location: All students from Grades 5–12 (G8 +) can individually pursue the educational path that suits them according to their strengths and interests.

Since the 2015/16 school year, after simultaneous beginning in grades 5–8, the GAG, which is currently organized as an open all-day school, has returned to a nine-year high school (-> Abitur 2019 as the last G8 Abitur year; first G9 year are the currently six tenth grades in the 2017/18 school year). The consequence of this school structure reform decided by a new state government is the step-by-step review and, if necessary, the adjustment of the current school profile, the use of space and the learning opportunities for pupils that may have to be changed to the new circumstances.

school

The Graf-Anton-Günther-Schule Oldenburg high school currently has 1,141 students from the Oldenburg district communities of Hatten-Sandkrug, Hude and Wardenburg. Since the school year 2010/11, the lessons, which have mainly been offered in double hours, are given by 100 teachers. This makes the school the largest grammar school in the region, but also one of the largest in Lower Saxony. In 2016 a total of 173 out of 176 (= 98.2%), in 2017 a total of 157 out of 160 admitted students achieved the general higher education entrance qualification (= 98.1%), in the secondary level there has been a stable five-part level in almost all for many years Years with an average of 28 students per class. The school authority is the district of Oldenburg . As a “Starterschule Plattdeutsch” (2015) certified by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture and with the associated offers, the Oldenburger Landkreisgymnasium identifies itself with the history and customs in its school catchment area, but as a European and MINT-EC school it is also clearly committed to regional borders overarching basic understanding of upbringing, general education and training.

After August Korte (1922–1925 and 1933–1936), Otto Modick (1925–1933), Georg Limann (1936 - May 1945), Heinz Baltzer (October 1945 - December 1956), Hans Dumkow (1957–1971), Günther Solling (1971–1987) and Friedrich-Wilhelm Müller (1987 - July 2009), Wolfgang Schoedel (since August 2009) is the eighth headmaster, the deputy headmaster is currently Hanne Rüth.

In its educational work, the Graf-Anton-Günther-Schule, which is recognized as an FSJ deployment center, is supported by two trained advisory teachers, a permanent social worker and FSJ sports staff who change every year. The high school, which is run as an open all-day school, regularly offers students internships and is a training school for teachers on preparatory work.

A characteristic of the regional high school, which sees itself as a regional advanced training and competence center and therefore cooperates with other institutions, is that an above-average percentage of the regularly teaching teachers receive teaching assignments at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg and / or as trainers at the study seminar for the Teaching at grammar schools.

The GAG describes its own school program [version dated November 9th, 2016] as a networked and thereby “learning system”; individual teachers are members of commissions of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture, the headmaster has been working in the School-University Discussion Group (GSU) at the University of Oldenburg since 1996, and in the GSS (= Discussion Group School- Study seminar), in the meantime (2012–2014) in the MINT-EC advisory group as well as in the founding board of the sponsoring association for the research center for schoolchildren NorthWest ("XperimenT!").

The school's foreign language courses include English, French, Latin and Italian, and also Dutch and Spanish via the Oldenburg cooperation. In year 5/1, in addition to the 29 compulsory hours, all students receive an additional hour of "Information Technology Basic Training" (ITG), in year 5/2 an additional language lesson (DFS = German-Foreign Languages). The language skills of individual teachers (currently Danish, Russian, Swedish and Turkish, among others), a support program, a permanent school social pedagogue, experience with German as a foreign, second and educational language (DaF or DAZNet) and cooperation partners are intended for students with a migration background facilitate the change of place of residence and / or type of school and support the inclusive learning approach of the district high school.

In June 2010 the Graf-Anton-Günther-Schule was named a pilot school in the “ Global Learning ” network by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Education , and the GAG has also been working as an interested UNESCO project school in various school networks since November 2012.

In 2014, the GAG received certification from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture as a sports-friendly school for its above-average sports program.

The GAG, which is therefore certified as a GAPP school, has maintained its school partnership with Eden Valley (Minnesota / USA) since the 1990s : In addition to the possibility of a six-month or year-round individual exchange, a three-week group exchange program has been implemented every year; In the uneven years, about 20 students go to the USA, in the even years there is a return visit.

In addition, the Graf-Anton-Günther-Schule is in increasingly closer contact through various EU programs (currently participation in two ErasmusPlus key actions) and, since 2011, through a school partnership agreement and the European Partners in Education (EPiE) network founded with it to the Gimnazjum Paderewskiego in Lublin (Poland), the Liceo Statale G. Batta in Desenzano del Garda (Italy), the Praedinius-Gymnasium in Groningen (Netherlands) as well as firmly connected with the English School Helsinki (Finland) and two English schools in Maidstone ( Kent). Since then, each of these schools has organized joint student projects every year which, in the case of Italian, are even firmly linked to the subject lessons and, in particular, in the case of the Praedinius Gymnasium Groningen, which is just an hour's drive away, GAG students have special opportunities for vocational and Open up study choice orientation.

In 2012 the GAG received a three-year certification , in 2015 a five-year certification from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Education as a European school in recognition of the school profile and the contacts and projects for pupils and / or teachers initiated and coordinated by the “GAG international” working group.

In 2012 a jury awarded GAG eligibility status in recognition of the profile offers in subjects from the fields of mathematics, (computer science,) natural sciences (and technology), and in 2016 full membership status of a MINT-EC school .

school-building

The school complex at Openstreetmap

The main entrance is on Schleusenstraße next to a bus stop named after the school. The building complex of the school with sports hall and "Graf-Anton-Günther-Forum" in the Oldenburg court district extends to the Dammschanze street . It lies just off the over the coastal channel leading Cecilia Bridge and the National Museum of Nature and Man .

The wings of the school building are arranged in a rectangular shape around the inner courtyard. In 2004, wing A (south wing) and wing C (north wing) were expanded to include a second floor. In addition, an older and smaller gymnasium was demolished and a two-story new building was built in its place. In 2008 and 2009 respectively, wing D followed (relocated teachers' room / upper school center or newly designed administration wing).

Since 2015, the school authority has been gradually renovating the school building, which mainly dates from the 1960s, for a planned EUR 13.8 million. The background to this are changed safety and energy standards as well as the pedagogically changed space requirements of the GAG, which will gradually return to nine years of high school from August 1, 2015, due to the goal of including all students. The visible results so far are the completely refurbished GAG sports hall, which opened again on September 7, 2017, as well as the "Graf-Anton-Günther-Forum", which replaced the former auditorium and opened on September 28, 2015, in which extracurricular events have also taken place since 2016 and a. the winners of the Klaus von Klitzing Prize will be presented.
