Granhed

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Granhed (also Granhedsbyarna , literally "the spruce heath villages ") is a collection of hamlets in the northeast of the Swedish municipality of Katrineholm in the province of Södermanland County and the historic province of Södermanland , which extends over an area of around 25 square kilometers. These include the hamlets of Östra Granhed, Västra Granhed, Södra Granhed and Nya Granhed (corresponding to East, West, South and New Granhed) and others with a total of 140 inhabitants. Granhed is about 2 km west of Harpsund .

history

From 1859 there was a paper mill called Gustavsfors in Västra Granhed , which in its heyday employed almost 40 people, including - rather unusual for the time - some women. Paper production was stopped at the beginning of the 20th century and the factory closed completely in the 1930s.

Until the 1960s Granhed still had 250 residents and owned a school, farm trade, car repair shop, bank, post office and other facilities. The factories have all disappeared today. The majority of the adult residents work outside the village. In Granhed today only agriculture and forestry is practiced. Granhedsgården is also operated as a course and conference hotel. Part of the population has moved to the surrounding towns of Flen (15 km), Katrineholm (25 km) and Eskilstuna (35 km).

Attractions

The Stöttastensvägen runs through Granhed, eight kilometers from Flodafors, the name of which is derived from the Stötta sten (supported stone), a large boulder along the way. On the street is also the Stora Gran , a high stub of a spruce that was 125 years old that remained standing after a lightning strike. In the former school on Stöttastensvägen south of Östra Granhed there is a local museum (Bygdegård).

Part of the area around Östra and Västra Granhed is designated as a cultural landscape that has remained largely unchanged since the beginning of the 20th century as a protected cultural asset of imperial interest (Riksintresse för kulturmiljövården) .
