Granja is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Mourão . It has 605 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

The place was often the victim of Spanish attacks and conquests. During the looting, the archives were also stolen or destroyed several times, so that there are only inadequate documents regarding the history of the community. Granja suffered severe damage, particularly during the Restoration War in the 17th century.

Presumably the place was already inhabited in the Paleolithic . The Guadiana flowing along here prompted the Romans and later Moors to settle here. The Roman bridges and Arabic ventilation chimneys they built were destroyed during the Reconquista . D.Afonso Henriques and Gerald the Fearless fought against the Moors here.

The place was put under the responsibility of the Hospitaller Order in the 14th century before it came to the Order of Avis in the 16th century .

Attractions

The parish church Igreja Paroquial da Granja , better known as Igreja Paroquial de São Brás , located above the village , was built in the 14th century. After several renovations in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, it now shows features of both the Baroque , for example on the facade, and Rococo , for example on the altarpieces and in the decorative paintings inside. The portals are attributed to Pedro Alvarez Moniz .
