Greater Kokstad ( English Greater Kokstad Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the Harry Gwala district , KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa. The seat of the municipal administration is Kokstad . TN Jojozi is the mayor. The ANC has the majority in the local council.
The community and town are named after the Griqua leader Adam Kok III, who lived here in 1863. In 2011 the population was 65,981 in a total area of 2,680 square kilometers.
The only town in the municipality is Kokstad.

In 2011 the community had 65,981 inhabitants. 87.1% of them were black, 8.2% colored , 3.3% white and 1.1% Indian or Asian .
The first language was 69.5% IsiXhosa , 8.6% English, 7.4% IsiZulu , 6.8% Afrikaans and 4.2% Sesotho . The community thus had a very different pattern from the rest of the province, in which the Zulu language dominates.
