Green Ensign
Green Ensign (German: Green Flag ) is the name of a historical flag that was hoisted by some Irish merchant ships from the 17th to the early 20th century . The green ensign consists of a golden harp on a green field with either the English flag (St. George's Cross) or a version of the Union Jack in Gösch .
The Green Ensign appears in the following selected historical flag panels:
year | Flag board |
---|---|
1685 | Downham's Flag Chart |
1700 | Len's Flag Chart |
1799 | Flags of all Nations |
1830s | Map of the Old World with border of flags (from the USA ) |
1848 | Flags of all seafaring nations |
1851, 1858 | A chart of National Flags (from Henry Bill, New York ) |

The question of whether the Green Ensign ever had some kind of official status in the British Isles or was only an informal flag of some merchant ships has not yet been clarified.
