The Greenwood Lake is about 12 km long lake on the border between the US states New Jersey and New York . It is located in West Milford ( Passaic County ) and Greenwood Lake ( Orange County ).

The lake was formed by the resident Munsee - Indians Quampium called and received by the Europeans who came in 1700 in the area, the name "Long Pond" . Eventually the lake got its current name Greenwood Lake . In 1837 a dam was built to increase the area of the lake and improve the effectiveness of hydroelectric power generation .

The lake thus enlarged began to attract day trippers. Several steamers were operated on the lake, including the boats "Arlington" and "Milford" operated by Greenwood Lake Transportation Company and the paddle steamer "Montclair" , built in 1876 , which had two decks and according to tradition could carry 200 to 400 passengers.

Today there are seaplanes , some marinas and restaurants on the banks of the lake . Greenwood Lake Airport , directly south of the lake, has a runway long enough to allow smaller jet planes to land .
