Greg Irons (born September 29, 1947 as Gregory Rodman Irons in Philadelphia , † November 14, 1984 in Bangkok ) was an American comic artist , illustrator and tattooist .

Life

Gregory Rodman Irons grew up in Philadelphia. Inspired by early MAD paperbacks , he began drawing cartoons. In 1967 he moved to San Francisco and designed some posters for the Fillmore Auditorium. For Bill Graham Productions he designed posters a. a. for the bands Moby Grape , Jefferson Airplane , CSNY and Santana . Then he moved to London , where he worked on the Beatles animated film Yellow Submarine . In 1969 he went back to San Francisco and continued to publish posters, record covers and comic book drawings.

By the mid-1970s, Irons designed several book illustrations, including for Troubadour Press, Sunset and Bellerophon books. In 1972 guitarist Peter Kaukonen returned from a Jefferson Starship tour; he got a tattoo from Thom Devita while on tour in New York City. In conversation, Greg Irons learned the price Kaukonen had paid and decided to earn his living as a tattoo artist in the future. He ordered his first tattoo equipment from Spaulding and Rogers around 1975. Irons realized that he could not learn the art of tattooing as an autodidact and began an apprenticeship in 1980 with Dean Dennis, a student of Lyle Tuttle , in San Francisco. Irons worked for a year at Deans, then in Seattle with CJ Danzl and Pete Stephens; from the end of 1982 back in San Francisco with Henry Goldfield.

Greg Irons was hit by a city bus in Bangkok on November 14, 1984 and was fatally injured.
