Tuttle was born in 1931, the son of farmer Howard H. Tuttle (born November 11, 1899 in Chariton ; February 14, 1989 in Ukiah) and his wife Erma Opal (born December 12, 1901 as Erma O. Kaster; † August 19, 1987 in Ukiah), born and raised in Ukiah, California. He received his first tattoo at the age of fourteen. Like many of the tattoo pioneers, Tuttle began tattooing by hand; In 1946 he moved to San Francisco, during which time he met Horst Linienbach, who was imprisoned in various POW camps from 1944 , most recently in California. From 1949 he worked professionally with a tattoo machine . Tuttle took as a soldier of the Marines on Korean War in part, from which he with severe frostbite returned home. He was honored for these war injuries. He married Betty Lawson on July 4, 1954, and they were married in Reno. In 1956 he started in Bert Grimm's shop in San Diego, and in 1957 he opened his own studio in San Francisco. For about 40 years he worked as a tattoo artist on six continents and, as he himself emphasized, “never knowingly tattooed a minor”. In October 1970, Tuttle gave the journalist Amie Hill an extensive interview, which was published as the cover story in Rolling Stone magazine ; the pictures were taken by the renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz . Tuttle coined the phrase “tattooists have to live with their mistakes, doctors bury them”. In 1976, photographer Imogen Cunningham created a series of Tuttle images.

In the 1970s, Tuttle gained a reputation as “the star tattoo artist” and his connection to the women's liberation movement did the rest. "The tattoo of Janis Joplin, Joan Baez and Cher brought Tuttle in California a celebrity status and he was inundated with requests for armband tattoos, butterflies, heart, rose buds and flowers." In 1972, Tuttle left a large series of T-shirts customize, which as a print reflected his entire upper body tattoo. The shirt became a cult item reported by LIFE Magazine in March 1972 . The shirt was newly made in 2018 in a limited / numbered edition as part of the retrospective entitled Lyle Tuttle: 70 years in Tattooing retrospective and fundraising .

The first international tattoo convention was held by Lyle Tuttle and David Yurkew on April 24-25 . Held in Houston , Texas on Jan. On January 19 and 21, 1996, Yurkew and Tuttle hosted the 20th anniversary of the first world tattoo convention in Houston.

In 1990 Tuttle retired. At the Tattoo Convention Frankfurt in May 2000, he initiated a fundraising campaign for his old friend Horst Straßenbach . Occasionally he would tattoo his signature on friends and acquaintances. In 2001 he sold his tattoo parlor. His collection of more than 800 electric tattoo machines from 1897 to the present is owned by a foundation based in his hometown of Ukiah. This also includes many antique tattoo templates and photos of well-known tattoo artists and tattooed people.

Trivia

Lyle Tuttle.jpg

“For example, I don't tattoo my hands, feet, neck or face. I don't have any tattoos there. If I don't have tattoos in those places, you don't need them either. And as a tattoo artist, you need a conscience. I can ruin your life for you, really now. I can tattoo some crap on your forehead. But I don't need it that I have to do something like that. If someone wants something like that, he should run down the street and he will find someone who will do it for him, but then it won't burden my conscience. "
