Gregor Joseph Werner (born January 28, 1693 in Ybbs an der Donau , † March 3, 1766 in Eisenstadt ) was an Austrian composer and the predecessor of Joseph Haydn as Kapellmeister of Prince Esterházy .

Life

Werner's birthplace in Ybbs on the Danube

Gregor Joseph Werner probably came to the Stiftsgymnasium Melk . Presumably he was organist here from 1716. Johann Joseph Fux is presumed to be his teacher ; his connections to the Johann Jakob Lotters printing works in Augsburg also suggest a stay in southern Germany.

From May 1728 Werner was court music director with Prince Esterházy in Eisenstadt. In 1761 Joseph Haydn became vice conductor and from 1762 only church music was under the direction of Werner, who was 39 years older than Haydn.

From Werner's estate, Joseph Haydn published six fugues for string quartet at Artaria in Vienna. He noted on the title page: “Out of special respect for this famous master” .

The focus of his work was church music. He composed more than 50 masses, Te Deen, Vespers, litanies, lamentos and numerous German oratorios, such as "Absalon" (1743), "Ester" (1746), "The Prodigal Son" (1747), "Job" (1748) ), "Holoferne" (1747) and "Ada" (1749).

Well-known non-sacred works include his “Symphonie sex senaeque Sonatae” (1735), “Diletto Musicale”, the “Instrumental Calendar” (description of the 12 months with musical forms of expression), “The Viennese Tandlmarkt”, “Farmer-Richters-Wahl “As well as a cello concerto.
