Gregor Schirmer

Gregor Schirmer (born April 1, 1932 in Nuremberg ) is a former German SED functionary and was a professor of international law in the GDR .

Life

Schirmer was born as the son of the KPD functionary Hermann Schirmer and his wife Anna. He moved to the GDR in 1950 when there was a trial by an American military tribunal for his work as FDJ district chairman in Nuremberg. In the GDR he worked for a short time in the Central Council of the FDJ, studied law at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig from 1951 to 1955 and in 1955/56 was an additional course in international law at the Academy for Political Science and Law in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Then he graduated to 1959 when Peter Alfons Stony a postgraduate at the Law Faculty of the Humboldt University of Berlin, which he awarded the degree of Dr. jur. completed.

Schirmer joined the KPD in Nuremberg in 1949 and became a member of the SED after moving to the GDR. He exercised honorary party functions until he was appointed full-time deputy secretary of the SED party leadership at Humboldt University in 1961. In 1962 Schirmer was appointed lecturer for international law at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and at the same time appointed Vice Rector. In 1965 he completed his habilitation on a topic of international law and was appointed professor of international law. In 1963 he was elected member of the People's Chamber for the Kulturbund of the GDR . He remained a member of the People's Chamber until 1990 and was a member of the Committee for Foreign Affairs and deputy chairman of the Kulturbund parliamentary group. From 1963 to 1990 he was a member of the Presidential Council of the Kulturbund and from 1972 of the Presidium. In 1965 Schirmer was appointed Deputy State Secretary for Universities and Technical Schools; after the state secretariat was converted into a ministry, he was deputy minister until 1976. At the same time he was a professor on leave at Humboldt University.

In 1976 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

From 1977 to 1989, Schirmer was deputy head of the science department of the Central Committee (ZK) of the SED. From November 1989 until the resignation of the SED Central Committee on December 3, 1989, Schirmer was head of the Commission for Science and Education at the Central Committee's Politburo. In 1990 he worked as a professor at the Academy for Social Sciences until it was closed. He became a retirement benefit recipient and retired in 1992. Schirmer worked for members of the PDS - or the left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag , is a member of the Association for International Politics and International Law, the Marxist Forum and the Council of Elders of the party Die Linke .
