Gregorius Kugler (* around 1505/10 in Heilbronn ; † June 11, 1575 there ) was town clerk and syndic of the imperial city of Heilbronn and appeared in the highest diplomatic missions for the city , especially during the Schmalkaldic War and the Augsburg interim .

Life

Gregorius Kugler was born as the son of the painter Jerg Kugler in Heilbronn. There are no documents about his birth or his wedding to Klara Thaler. Already married, he appears for the first time on 1 November 1529 the parish registers of the University of Heidelberg , where he Jura studied. In 1530, the city council of Heilbronn proposed Kugler for the University's Stock'sche scholarship. In 1532 he was an alumnus iuris . In 1538 or 1539 he became town clerk in Heilbronn, where he also held the title of syndic . In 1543 he was with Mayor Hans Riesser in Heidelberg to renew the alliance between the imperial city and the Electoral Palatinate . In the following time tensions arose because the imperial city of Heilbronn , which was subordinate to Emperor Karl V , had joined the Schmalkaldic League , which in turn came into conflict with the Emperor, who escalated to the Schmalkaldic War . Kugler represented the imperial city at the federal congress of the Schmalkaldic League in Ulm in 1546. After the collapse of the Schmalkaldic alliance policy and the withdrawal of the Saxon army from southwest Germany in November 1546, Kugler was again in Heidelberg with Hieronymus Schnabel, where he and his predecessor Gregorius von Nallingen, the had previously been city clerk in Heilbronn and was now in the service of the elector, asked for the Palatinate to mediate with the emperor. On December 11, 1546, Kugler, Schnabel and Peter Feurer went to Hall to negotiate the handover of the imperial city to the emperor. On December 14th they obtained a letter of protection for the city of Heilbronn in Landsiedel-Kirchberg, which the emperor confirmed in Rotenburg the following day. When the emperor stayed in Heilbronn from December 24, 1546 to January 16, 1547, Kugler stepped forward again to bring the emperor thanks and gifts for the proven sparing of the city. After an imperial envoy of the city had opened the demand for the payment of 20,000 guilders to King Ferdinand I on March 10, 1547 , Kugler accompanied Peter Feurer to Prague on May 11, 1549 , in order to reconcile the city with King Ferdinand thereby lowering the original claim to 9,000 guilders. When Charles V sent Spanish troops to Heilbronn in March 1548 to enforce the Augsburg interim , Kugler and Ambrosius Becht sought the emperor in Augsburg on April 2, 1548 , to persuade him to withdraw the Spanish troops. Since this did not succeed, however, Kugler recommended in a letter of May 29, 1548 the council of the city of Heilbronn to accept the interim in order to get rid of the Spaniards feared because of their attacks against the population. On June 5, 1548, the council passed the resolution approving the interim, which Kugler was able to hand over to the emperor a week later, after which the order to evacuate the city was issued on June 18 and the Spaniards left the city on July 2, 1548. When, in 1552, the city council was appointed by Dr. Hase was remodeled, the skilled negotiator Kugler was recalled, who was included in the consultations. In the same year Kugler was with the mayor Christoph Erer in the army camp of Margrave Albrecht II Alcibiades of Brandenburg-Kulmbach in Geislingen, where he mediated between Protestant and imperial forces. When the alliance between Heilbronn and the Electoral Palatinate was renewed in 1561 and 1571, Kugler was with Wendel Anns in Heidelberg. In 1570, Kugler was also a member of the Heilbronn delegation, which Emperor Maximilian II led from Speyer to Heilbronn. Kugler's daughter Barbara married the mayor of Heilbronn, Georg Becht .
