Gregorius Struve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gregorius Struve († before 1737) was a master craftsman of Arp Schnitger and a well-known organ builder in the Oldenburg and Bremen area .

Life

Struve came from Westensee and was probably the son of the local organist Hans Jürgen Struve. He is proven as a journeyman at Schnitger's new organ in the Bremen Cathedral (1693–1698). He was probably a good voicer who had a position of trust with Schnitger. He was given the management of various new buildings by the master. Nine works by him can be found in the county of Oldenburg . From 1715 and increasingly from 1720 he was responsible for the maintenance of Bremen's city organs. His occasional designation as a “city soldier” goes back to his service in the Bremen vigilante group (1712–1730). He died before 1737. His son Johann Caspar († 1759 in Aurich) is mentioned as an employee of Johann Friedrich Constabel (from 1741) and of Johann Adam Berner (1756). In 1744 he repaired the organ in St. Wilhadi Church in Stade, where his father was also active. Peter Struve, who worked in Schleswig-Holstein in the second half of the 18th century, is possibly a family descendant.
