Life

There is no more detailed information about the dates of life and origin of Gregory, probably he comes from the de Galgano family, attested in Rome in the early 13th century . Whether the designation as frater, which has only been used once, indicates a religious affiliation cannot be clarified with any certainty. In the spring of 1206 Pope Innocent III appointed him . cardinal deacon of San Teodoro . First he was appointed as an auditor at the Curial Court, in 1207 the Pope appointed him legate in the Kingdom of Sicily , as the previous legate, Gerhard von San Adriano, had died during the legation. By the end of the year at the latest, Gregory was active in the north of the kingdom. In September 1213 he was recalled from Sicily because the Pope was dissatisfied with his administration. During his tenure, Gregory mediated a comparison between San Salvatore di Messina and Santa Maria della Grotta in Palermo , the confirmation of which by Honorius III. informed on February 1, 1219 that the cardinal priest Gregory had previously been cardinal deacon of S. Teodoro, and therefore two clerics named Gregory succeeded each other in the diakonia. Innocent III. graduated from a consistory in early 1216 as cardinal priest and awarded him the titular church of Sant'Anastasia . Gregory signed papal bulls between March and April 1216 and between October 1216 and May 1224. He also took part in the papal election in 1216 , from which Honorius III. emerged as Pope. Under Honorius, Gregor was appointed curial judge and in December 1222 he was named rector of Segni . The last signature can be found on a privilege dated May 23, 1224, he is likely to have died soon after, according to a necrology from Sant'Agata in Catania on July 21.
