Gregory W. Moore
Gregory Winthrop Moore (* 1961 ) is an American theoretical and mathematical physicist who deals with string theory and quantum field theory.
Moore studied for a bachelor's degree at Princeton University and received his PhD from Harvard University in 1985 with Sidney Coleman ( Geometrical Aspects of Anomalies ). He is a professor at Rutgers University .
Among other things, he dealt with the connections of string theory (extreme) black holes to number theory and automorphic forms (and to other areas of string theory such as perturbation theory and cosmology), topological field theories (with applications to topological invariants), branes, two-dimensional quantum gravity, conformal Field theories (also with application to anyons ) and string field theory . He works closely with mathematicians.
For example, he applied the attractor mechanism (after Renata Kallosh , Andrew Strominger , Sergio Ferrara ) from the theory of supersymmetric black holes to the compactification of superstrings and showed that certain arithmetic Calabi-Yau manifolds are distinguished.
From 1986 to 1989, 1999, 2002, 2006 and 2012 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study , where he worked with Edward Witten , among others . In 1994 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich (Two dimensional Yang-Mills theory and topological field theory). In 2011 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 2012 he became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society , and in 2020 he was elected member of the National Academy of Sciences . For 2014 he was awarded the Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics and the Leonard Eisenbud Prize , and for 2015 the Dirac Medal of the ICTP.
