history

In 773 Grethen was first mentioned in a document as "Crothincheim", after it had already been settled first by the Celts and later by the Romans. At the time of the settlement by the Celts, Grethen was also the seat of a prince.

From around 950 the Salierburg Limburg was built on site. According to a document dated February 16, 1035, Emperor Konrad II gave Grethen to the newly founded Limburg Monastery . It says that the monastery will keep the site as its property, with all the rights and usufructs that the Rhine Franconian dukes have had there since then . The first monk known by name there, Florian von Beck lived there between 1435 and 1472.

After the Limburg monastery was abolished around 1574, the village was divided between the Electoral Palatinate and Leiningen .

From 1902 to 1931 the place belonged to the district office Dürkheim . On March 31, 1935 it was incorporated into Bad Dürkheim. The neighboring village of Hausen, which emerged as a new development area in the 1960s, also belongs to the local district of Grethen .
