Großaltdorf - called Ââldorf [ ˈɔːldˌoʀf ] in the regional dialect - is a district of the town of Vellberg in the district of Schwäbisch Hall in Baden-Württemberg and was an independent municipality before 1972.

geography

The area of the former municipality lies in the wider, open hollow of the middle and upper Aalenbach and extends east and south-east to the first heights of the wooded northern foothills of the Ellwang Mountains on this side of the Speltach valley. Großaltdorf itself is on the right on the slope above the middle Aalenbachtal, followed there by the neighboring hamlet of Kleinaltdorf , with which it has grown together today. The hamlet of Lorenzenzimmern is about two kilometers east-northeast in the upper valley.

history

Town hall in Großaltdorf

The area of Großaltdorf became Franconian around the year 500 in the course of the displacement of the Alamanni to the south. One of the oldest settlements around Schwäbisch Hall was located here, which is represented by a Franconian equestrian grave made in 1938. It is assumed that there was a Frankish settlement, starting from the Vellberger Stöckenburg , as early as the 7th century. The first documentary mention as "Alahdorp" dates from the year 848. In 974 a Bartholomäus chapel was donated by Count Hugo in Altdorf. At the end of the 11th century a local nobility can be documented.

Großaltdorf was within the Haller Landheeg, which was laid out in the late Middle Ages . In 1538 the place was reformed . A major fire broke out in 1563. From 1595 on, Großaltdorf was entirely Hallish and was subordinate to the Bühler office in the state territory of the imperial city of Hall .

The Thirty Years War reduced the population by a quarter.

1803 came the place with Hall to Württemberg . When the new administrative structure in the Kingdom of Württemberg was implemented , Großaltdorf remained assigned to the Hall Oberamt . In 1867, the town with its own train station on the Crailsheim – Heilbronn line was connected to the Württemberg railway network , so that markets were held from 1870 to 1909.

In 1930/31 the water pipe was laid in the village. During the district reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg , Großaltdorf came to the Schwäbisch Hall district in 1938.

On April 20, 1945, American artillery bombardment largely destroyed the village center in the course of the Battle of Crailsheim . In 1945 Großaltdorf fell into the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. After the Second World War, the village population almost doubled to almost 900 as a result of the influx of displaced persons . The village expanded through the development of new building areas.

On January 1, 1972, the former community Großaltdorf came to Vellberg as part of the Baden-Württemberg community reform in the 1970s .
