The large-flowered stone purse ( Aethionema grandiflorum ) is a species of the genus stone purse ( Aethionema ) within the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae). The natural distribution area is in the Middle East . It is used as an ornamental plant.

Vegetative characteristics

The large-flowered stone purse is a subshrub that reaches heights of up to 35 centimeters. There are many relatively thin, more or less subdivided branches that only branch at the base. The leaves are distributed over the entire length of the branches. The leaf blade is 2 to 3 centimeters long and lanceolate and has a strong blue frosting.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from June to July. The flowers are in contract leafless , initially dense doldentraubigen inflorescences together; the inflorescence axes stretch until the fruit is ripe and the greatly elongated fruit stand is then grape-like .

The relatively large, hermaphrodite flowers are four-fold. The four light-lilac-pink petals are three to four times longer than the sepals .

The two-seeded pods are circular and broadly winged with a diameter of about 1 centimeter.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24 or 28.

Distribution and location requirements

The natural range is in Turkey , northern Iraq , Iran and the Caucasus . The large-flowered stone purse grows in steppes and dry forests on dry to fresh, slightly acidic to strongly alkaline, sandy, sandy-gravelly or sandy-loamy, nutrient-rich soils in sunny to light-shaded locations. The first description of Aethionema grandiflorum was made in 1849 by Pierre Edmond Boissier and Rudolph Friedrich Hohenacker in Diagnoses Plantarum Orientalium Novarum , Series 1, 8, 42. The genus name Aethionema derived from the Greek words aethes for "unusual" and nema for "thread" from . He refers to the unusual arrangement of the stamens, which are also winged on the inside . The specific epithet grandiflorum comes from Latin and means "large-flowered".
