The Great Balachnja ( Russian Большая Балахня ( Bolschaja Balachnja)) is a left tributary of the Khatanga in the northern Russian lowlands .
The Great Balachnja has its origin in the southeast of the Taimyr Peninsula in Lake Majagastach . It flows through a tundra swamp landscape with many meanders in a northeastern direction. Its largest tributary, the left Great Balachnja , flows into the river from the left. The Great Balachnja then turns to the east and southeast and finally reaches the confluence of the Chatanga. The Great Balachnja has a length of 532 km and drains an area of 12,600 km².
The river is ice-covered between late September and early June. It is considered to be rich in fish. The river fauna of the Great Balachnja includes the following fish species: whitefish , muksun , the white salmon subspecies Stenodus leucichthys nelma and char .
