The Großelendkopf is 3317  m above sea level. A. the second highest mountain in the Ankogel group , after the 3360  m high Hochalmspitze . The mountain is located in the area of ​​the municipality of Malta and east of Mallnitz in Carinthia . It used to be seen as a secondary summit of the Hochalmspitze.

At the northeast ridge to Preimlscharte are the minor peaks Southern end head ( 3081  m ), Middle end head ( 3068  m ) and Northern end head ( 3048  m ). To the north of the mountain lies the Großelendkees , to the east the Hochalmkees and to the west the Winkelkees . The Großelendkees drains into the Großelendbach, in the valley called Großelend . From the Osnabrücker Hütte located there, the Großelendkopf forms the end of the valley above the Großelendkees.

etymology

Names with misery indicate remote areas. This was formerly called Ali lanti .

Routes

The Großelendkopf can be reached from the Osnabrücker Hütte via the Preimlscharte and the Hochalmkees or from the Villacher Hütte also via the Hochalmkees, both routes lead over crevasse glaciers. The Arnoldweg ( II , Firn ), found in 1894 by C. Arnold and the mountain guide Gfrerer, leads through the west and south-west flanks .

The transition to the Hochalmspitze is possible in about half an hour via an easy firn and block ridge.
