The Great Driving Mountain is 453.4 m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the middle east of the North Sauerland Oberland . It is located near Scharfenberg in the North Rhine-Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis ( Germany ).

The Große Fahrenberg rises in the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park . Its summit is 3 km north-northwest of the Brilon district of Scharfenberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis and 2 km south of the Rüthener district of Heidberg in the neighboring district of Soest . Most of the mountain with its summit region belongs to the Brilon district; up to 437.4 m height, the district ranges Ruethen on the northwest slope and up to 447.5 m height on the Sudwesthang the district Scharfenberg. To the northeast, the Möhne flows roughly in a southeast-northwest direction and its tributary Biber to the southwest in the same direction . The south-eastern neighbor is the Kleine Fahrenberg .
Natural allocation
The Große Fahrenberg belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33) and in the main unit North Sauerland Oberland (334) to the subunit Obermöhne- and Almewald (334.6). The landscape passes to the northwest into the natural area Heve-Möhne-Wald (334.31), which belongs to the subunit Upper Arnsberg Forest (334.3), and to the southeast into the natural area Almer Grund (334.71), part of the subunit Briloner Land (334.7) with the Brilon plateau and the Brilon heights that frame it.
Protected areas
Parts of the Wünnenbecke nature reserve ( CDDA no. 389957; designated 2007; 1.3475 km² in size) lie on the north-eastern slope of the forested Großer Fahrenberg and parts of the Bibertal nature reserve (CDDA no. 389658; 2007; 17.64 ha ) . On large parts of the mountain and its summit region there are parts of the landscape protection area (LSG) Obermöhne- / Almewald and Almer Quellgrund (CDDA no. 555554546; 2008; 30.4046 km²) and those of the LSG in the Soest district (CDDA no . 555561025; 2009; 278.5373 km²). Parts of the fauna-flora-habitat area Möhne Oberlauf (FFH No. 4516-302; 82.05 ha) extend to the foot-close area of the north-eastern slope of the mountain . In addition, the five-man beech, which has been designated a natural monument , stands on the north-northeast slope of the mountain .
