from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The megalithic graves near Maßlow were several megalithic tombs of unknown numbers from the Neolithic funnel beaker culture near Maßlow , a district of Lübow in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). Two graves were destroyed around 1850 and examined. The finds made in the process are now in the collection of the Archaeological State Museum Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in Schwerin . The remaining graves were destroyed in the further course of the 19th century.

location

Georg Christian Friedrich Lisch reported on many megalithic graves on the Maßlow field . He gave an approximate description of the location only for the two examined. According to this, grave 1 was about 140 paces (approx. 100 m) from a bog and 10 paces (approx. 7.5 m) from the path. Grave 2 was close by.

description

Grave 1

Double-conical vessel from grave 1

Tomb 1 was an oval-shaped mound that was 40 feet long , 20 feet wide, and 1 foot high. No information is available on the alignment. The burial chamber consisted of several shifted wall stones and four cap stones that fell into the interior of the chamber. It was probably a large dolmen . Of the capstones, the first was 7 feet (about 2.1 m) long, the second 8 feet (about 2.4) long and wide, the third 8.5 feet (about 2.6 m) long and 5 Feet (about 1.5 m) wide and the fourth 7 feet (about 2.1 m) long and 3.5 feet (about 1.1 m) wide. On one narrow side there was a broken stone 7 feet long.

An undecorated double-conical ceramic vessel with a height of 14.1 cm and a Store Valby ax made of whitish-light gray flint with a length of 13.5 cm were recovered from the grave .

Grave 2

Grave 2 was an oval-shaped mound that was 50 feet long and 30 feet wide. Here, too, there is no information on the orientation. The grave was surrounded by stone. The chamber had several sunken capstones. The largest capstone was still in the middle of the chamber on four wall stones. It was 13 feet (about 3.9 meters) long and 4 feet (1.2 meters) wide. The exact type of grave cannot be determined with certainty from this description.

Narrow chisel, probably from a large stone grave near Maßlow

About the remaining graves, Lisch wrote only very generally of "many barrows, several of which are surrounded and covered with very large granite blocks." Statements about the grave types are not possible on the basis of this description.

A flint chisel , which is in the Schwerin collection, may have come from one of the graves .
