The large stone grave Reinfeld is a megalithic grave complex of the Neolithic funnel cup culture near Reinfeld (Holstein) in the Stormarn district in Schleswig-Holstein . The grave bears the Sprockhoff number 286 and the site number Reinfeld LA 3. It was archaeologically examined in 1919 by Friedrich Knorr and again in 1936 by Fritz Tischler . This was followed by a restoration.

location

The grave is located north of Reinfeld on the edge of a forest. It stands on a hilltop and is accessible via a path.

description

The complex has an east-west oriented burial chamber . The length is 5.5 m outside and 3.8 m inside, the width outside 2.5 m and inside 1.2 m. During the excavations, four wall stones were found on the northern and two on the southern long side, as well as a closing stone each on the narrow sides. Three capstones had fallen inside the chamber. They were put back on the wall stones during the restoration. East of the chamber were two stones that could not be assigned with certainty. The spaces between the wall stones were originally filled with dry stone masonry made from split stones. Tischler could still find remains of this between the two easternmost stones on the north side. The chamber plaster consisted of two layers. First there was a layer of stone slabs on the natural ground. Occasional pieces of fired flint were found between the floor and stone slabs . Above that followed a 30 cm thick layer of loamy sand , which was partially interspersed with split stones. A 40 cm thick filling of humus soil followed. It is unclear where the original access to the chamber was. Thus, the exact type of grave cannot be determined with certainty. Due to the size of the chamber and the number of wall stones, it must have been either a large dolmen or a passage grave.

Burial remains or additions were not found during the excavations. Allegedly, however, two ceramic vessels were recovered sometime before 1921 and brought to the Museum of Patriotic Antiquities in Kiel . Corresponding file notes are missing, however.

The grave in regional sagas

According to a legend , the grave was the dwelling of a giant . One day he went to Nütschau and was killed by another giant.
