Great stone grave Roggow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The large stone grave Roggow was a megalithic grave complex of the Neolithic funnel cup culture near Roggow , a district of Rerik in the Rostock district ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). It was discovered by chance around 1822 and examined before it was destroyed.

location

The grave was near Roggow am Salzhaff , at the foot of a range of hills running southeast-northwest.

description

No details are available about the architecture of the tomb. It is merely referred to as "a great burial site from the giant age". Although no stones are mentioned, the complex was classified by Ewald Schuldt and, following him, Hans-Jürgen Beier as a large stone grave of an indeterminable type. Ingeburg Nilius , however, saw it as a shallow grave . The burial chamber was about 8 feet (about 2.4) below the surface.

An outstretched human skeleton lay in the center of the chamber. On both sides of this burial 12-16 additional skeletons were grouped, all of which were oriented with the skull to the central skeleton. Some skeletons were quite small. To the left of the skull of the middle skeleton lay a horse skull and 6–7 flint blades . Ceramic vessels, unspecified, stood above the skull and on the feet. Otherwise several shattered ceramic vessels and several flint axes were found in the chamber . In 1843, two skulls, a thin- bladed cross ax and a blade were added to the collection of the Grand Ducal Museum, today's Archaeological State Museum Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in Schwerin . In the case of the latter, however, it is questionable whether it actually comes from this grave, since according to Nilius it is more likely to be assigned to the Mesolithic .
