The H3 Grob Aircraft SE based in Tussenhausen in Unterallgäu is one of the world's leading manufacturer of aircraft from composite materials . The predecessor company Grob Aerospace GmbH developed the Grob G180 SP n , the world's first business jet made entirely of carbon fiber reinforced plastic .

history

Aircraft production originally ran under the name Burkhart Grob Luft- und Raumfahrt GmbH & Co. KG , later Grob Aerospace GmbH . The aircraft manufacturer in Tussenhausen, renamed with the takeover by Fortius Mittelstandskapital AG into its current name Grob Aircraft AG (CEO was the former EADS manager Johann Heitzmann , current chairman is André Hiebeler ), is the license holder for the Grob aircraft (except for Grob SP n ) and is owned by H3 Aerospace GmbH & Co. KG .

From 1971, the license production started more than 200 gliders type Schempp-Hirth Standard Cirrus by Burkhart Grob Aerospace GmbH & Co. KG , which was then part of the Grob-Werke was. In the early 1980s, Grob Luft- und Raumfahrt began manufacturing motor-powered aircraft, the first of which was the G 109A touring motor glider . One problem was the low power of the engines available at the time for the comparatively heavy plastic constructions , which ultimately led to the development of the Grob 2500 engine with 90 hp, which was used in the G 109B built from 1983 . There were also numerous other further developments by external companies (such as the Korff company ), who adapted 90 to 130 hp Limbach aircraft engines to the G 109 so that they are also suitable for cost-effective aircraft towing of gliders.

In 1991 the first flight of the GF 200 prototype took place. This is a research project with which a new type of drive should be tested. A piston motor drives the propeller in the stern via a remote shaft. In addition, the aircraft was largely made of carbon fiber composite construction . The aim was to develop an aircraft with jet flight characteristics at significantly lower operating costs. The experience with the development agency was used for some follow-up projects.

In 1993 the involvement of the Grob company in the so-called amigo affair became public. Max Streibl (1932–1998), the then Prime Minister of Bavaria and friend of Burkhart Grob, was involved in this bribery scandal. Streibl was accused of having illegally advocated the award of the order for the LAPAS EloKa system to the Grob company by the Federal Ministry of Defense . Furthermore, Streibl is said to have obtained high funding for Grob from the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology and the State Institute for Development Finance . These allegations are still unproven. Grob had previously paid for Streibl's two vacation trips to Brazil and Kenya and had given him party donations. This became known in January 1993. Due to internal and public pressure, Streibl resigned on May 27, 1993.

In July 2005, started with the G180 SPn of the world's first completely made in carbon fiber reinforced plastic business jet to its first flight .

In 2006 the company was sold to the Swiss Executive Jet Investments AG and renamed Grob Aerospace GmbH .

In August 2008, the management of Grob Aerospace GmbH filed for insolvency at the competent local court due to insolvency. Production could be maintained until the end of October of the same year, after which the employees had to be released.

At the end of January 2009, H-3 Aerospace took over the training aircraft and maintenance business with the help of Fortius Mittelstandskapital AG and has since continued it as Grob Aircraft AG , whereupon production was resumed on February 1st. Production was reduced to the G 115E, G 120A and G 120TP as well as the G 520 EGRETT, but the motor gliders will continue to be serviced at the Mattsies site. In April 2012 it was announced that the Argentine aircraft manufacturer FAdeA, in cooperation with Grob Aircraft , will produce the jet-powered two-seat training and combat aircraft IA-63 Pampa II in a number of 60 aircraft at the plant in Cordoba. Grob Aircraft will act as a supplier for individual components.
