The Grote Kerk in the Dutch city of Vianen , province of Utrecht , is the city's oldest church and serves a Reformed parish within the Protestant Church in the Netherlands .

history

A pre-existing chapel was donated on August 1, 1327 by the local feudal lord Zweder II. Van Vianen to build a new building , financed by his wealthy son-in-law Willem van Duivenvoorde , keeper of the Holland County seal . A pseudo-basilica was built . The church was under the parish of Gasperden (today Hagestein ), but received baptism and burial rights in 1345. After the elevation to an independent parish church in 1435, the church was expanded to a hall church . Most of the church burned down during the city fire of 1540. The builder directed the rapid reconstructionCornelis Frederiksz . Since then there have been no major structural changes. On September 25, 1566, the parish joined the Reformation . Statues of saints and altars were immediately removed.

Building

The Grote Kerk is a hall church with a transept . The west tower is made of brick and has predominantly Romanesque  shapes, although it was not built until the “Gothic period”. The nave , built in several phases between the 14th and 15th centuries, is Gothic and mostly also made of brick. In some walls, however, there is a decorative change in color, in that several layers of brick and several layers of tufa of almost the same size alternate.

The roof of the ship consists of a longitudinal roof and four transverse roofs. The easternmost one covers the transept, the other three cover the aisles of the nave . Its westernmost sections, shorter than a normal yoke , each have a ridge in the longitudinal direction of the church and a gable triangle next to the western tower. The structure of the roofs and roof ridges recognizable from the outside corresponds to the covering of the parts of the nave with wooden barrel vaults inside.
