The course of the race had 13 climbs and the last ascent is the Hulstbergstraat , a good 21 kilometers from the finish. After 45 kilometers, a six-man breakaway group led by the Swiss Lukas Spengler (WB Veranclassic) pulled away. The group had a maximum of 3:40 minutes ahead. 70 kilometers from the finish, the leading group was misdirected and the group was placed 20 kilometers further. Then about 20 men drove away from the field, including with Paul Martens (Germany / LottoNL). This group was also caught up again. Due to many falls and attacks in the final phase of the race, 18 men were now in the lead. The group included: Matteo Trentin (Italy / Quick Step), Jempy Drucker (Luxembourg / BMC), Paul Martens and Fernado Gaviria (Colombia / Quick Step). A few kilometers before the finish, Drucker and Trentin broke away from this group and shortly afterwards Trentin drove away from Drucker. Trentin thereby won the race as a soloist. Printer followed 6 seconds later. The rest of Martens's group were caught up. Third place in the sprint was André Greipel (Germany / Lotto Soudal).
