Grusonia bulbispina is a species of plant in the genus Grusonia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet bulbispina (lat. Bulbispinus ) means 'with onion-like thickened spines'.

Grusonia bulbispina grows low and forms mats with a diameter of 60 to 120 centimeters. The egg-shaped shoot sections with conspicuous 6 to 8 millimeter high cusps are 1 to 1.2 centimeters long. The four central spines are thickened like an onion at their base and 8 to 12 millimeters long. The eight to twelve needle-like radial spines have a length of 3 to 6 millimeters.

The flowers are purple in color.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Grusonia bulbispina is common in the Mexican states of Coahuila , Durango , Nuevo León and Zacatecas at altitudes of 850 to 1300 meters. The distribution area is very small and covers about 4500 km².

It was first described as Opuntia bulbispina in 1856 by George Engelmann . Harold Ernest Robinson placed the species in 1973 in the genus Grusonia . Synonyms are Cylindropuntia bulbispina (Engelm.) FMKnuth (1930) and Corynopuntia bulbispina (Engelm.) FMKnuth (1936).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered. The species is only known from one location and the habitat areas are reduced due to intensive land use.
