Guitar Driver is an Austrian documentary film that accompanies the Austrian “extreme guitarist” Karl Ritter for over a year and gives insights into his private life and his opinions, accompanied by his own music. It was shot in Vienna in 2017 by the Austrian director , cameraman and filmmaker Walter Großbauer . The theatrical release was on July 13, 2018 in Austria and Germany.

action

The Austrian “extreme guitarist” Karl Ritter was never attracted by the notated sound. “Play, not practice” is his credo. As a child, he touched steel strings for the first time. Under the pseudonym Leopold Karasek he played in Kurt Ostbahn's "Chefpartie". Wide-ranging excursions into rough and gentle landscapes followed, on resonator, electric and western guitar. At the moment his journey is taking him through a world of fantastic sounds that his guitars - almost - generate by themselves: oscillations, vibrations, feedback, bizarre structures at their best.

The film follows Karl Ritter's footsteps, in everyday life and in his appearances over the course of a year. Starting with his project “White Walls”, which he launched with Christian Reiner and Herbert Pirker , at his appearance at ARS-Electronica in Linz, at the performance of his composition “Sound Ritual”, a cosmic sound journey, in the church of Stockerau, to which he has invited Austria's most important avant-garde musicians. Even when appearances with the band "Kurt Ostbahn und die Kombo" have become rare, the camera is there as well as at a concert with Otto Lechner accompanying the exhibition about their joint trip to Africa. A rehearsal with actress Anne Bennent for her poetry concert “Comment dire”, his annual birthday concert with Mamadou Diabate in the legendary Porgy and Bess are further stops on the cinematic journey.

Insights into Karl's private life, his history, his wisdom merge into a music film in which listening and watching enter into an interrelation, determined by impressive acoustic passages and visually stunning montages that illuminate Karl and his homeland in all seasons.
