Guo Yonghuai

Guo Yonghuai or Kuo Yung-huai ( Chinese : 郭永怀; born April 4, 1909 in Rongcheng ; † December 5, 1968 ) was a Chinese aerodynamics expert and a leader of China's nuclear and hydrogen bomb projects.

Life

Born in Rongcheng County, Shandong Province , Guo graduated from the Department of Physics at Peking University in 1935. He enrolled in an overseas program in 1939 and entered the University of Toronto , Canada in 1940 , where he received his master's degree. From 1941 to 1945 Guo studied compressible hydrodynamics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). After receiving his Ph.D. degree, he stayed at Caltech as a research fellow. From 1946 he became an associate professor and later professor at Cornell University . Invited by Tsien Hsue-shen, Guo returned to China in October 1956 and became assistant director of the Institute of Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Guo was one of the co-founders of the science of mechanics in mainland China, and made significant contributions to mechanics, applied mathematics, and aviation . In 1958 he helped establish the University of Science and Technology of China and served as chairman of the Department of Chemical Physics.

Since May 1960, Guo served as the deputy director of the Beijing Ninth Research Institute of the Second Ministry of Industry. He carried out work in explosive mechanics, high pressure physics, aerodynamics, aerospace, structural mechanics, experimental weapon development and solved a number of important problems.

Guo died in a plane crash on December 5, 1968, while traveling from Qinghai to Beijing .

In December 1982, China's Science Press published Guo Yonghuai's work. In 1985 he received the National Science and Technology Advancement Award. In 1999, Guo won the Two Bombs, One Satellite Achievement Medal.
