Gurkovo (also Gurkovo written Bulgarian Гурково ) is a town in southern Bulgaria . It is located in the Oblast Stara Sagora , 30 km northeast of Stara Sagora , 3 km north of Nikolaevo .
Gurkowo is the administrative center of the Gurkowo municipality of the same name.
In the 19th century Gurkowo had the double name Chajnito (also Chainito or Chaineto) and Kuloptschin. The old name of the Chainboas mountain pass , today the pass of the republic , is also derived from Chajnito . Kuloptschin was renamed Gurkowo in 1906 and was named General Gurkowo from 1940 to 1947. Gurkowo was promoted to town in 1974.
The city is named after General Josef Gurko , under whose leadership the city of Stara Sagora was captured by Russian troops in the Russian-Ottoman War in 1877 .
geography
The city is located in central Bulgaria, in the eastern part of the Rose Valley , enclosed between the mountain ranges of the Balkan Mountains and the Sredna Gora .
The rivers Tundscha , Radowa (bulg. Радова ) and Lasowa (bulg. Лазова ) flow through the area of the municipality Gurkowo . There is also the Schrebtschewo reservoir (Bulgarian язовир Жребчево ), which dams the Tunscha. This reservoir is the third largest in Bulgaria, after the Iskar reservoir and Studen kladenez reservoir .
