Gust Tsilis

Gust William Tsilis (born April 14, 1956 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American jazz musician ( vibraphone , marimba , drums , percussion ), composer and music producer.

Live and act

Tsilis received piano lessons as a child, but also played drums as a self-taught person. During his studies at Berklee College of Music , which began in 1974 , he concentrated on the vibraphone. In 1981 he moved to New York City , where he worked with Herb Robertson (appearance at the Willisau Jazz Festival 1987), Wilber Morris and Arthur Blythe (since 1990 until today). He founded his own formation, which included musicians such as Joe Lovano , Arthur Blythe, Lonnie Plaxico and Billy Hart . With Billy Hart, Peter Madsen and Anthony Cox he recorded his first album Possibilities in 1988 .

Tsilis was temporarily active as a promoter and producer, especially for the Japanese Ken label and Matthias Winckelmann's Enja label , for which he discovered Kevin Mahogany and was responsible for productions by Maria Schneider , Art Taylor and other American musicians. From 1986 to 1999 he directed the New York jazz club Visiones . He also recorded with Ron Getz and Karl Denson . In 2000 he toured Europe with his own quartet and with Lindsey Horner's band . In 2002 he moved to Los Angeles ; currently he mainly writes television and film music .
