Gustav Adolf Müller (painter)
Gustav Adolf Müller , stage name Gustav Adolf Müller-Koburg (born August 9, 1828 in Hildburghausen , † June 2, 1901 in Rome ) was a German painter.
Life
Müller was the son of Daniel Friedrich Müller, a gardener to the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and the twin brother of the sculptor Eduard Müller . He attended the Academy of Arts in Munich , where he enrolled on November 29, 1845 at the age of 17 for painting, and the Academy of Arts in Antwerp with Gustave Wappers . In 1850 he studied with Charles Gleyre in Paris for a few months , painted portraits in Coburg and Gotha , then in Vienna, and was appointed to the court of Portugal in 1857 , where he was appointed court painter and received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Christ . After he had painted many portraits in London from 1857 to 1859 , he settled in Rome, where, in addition to portraits, he also created a number of genre pictures from mythology and Roman folk life as well as hunting pieces. Gustav Müller was a professor and member of the Academy of San Luca in Rome. In 1880 he and his brother were made an honorary citizen of the city of Coburg . Gustav Müller was buried with his brother Eduard in the Protestant cemetery in Rome.
