Gustav Böhm (musician)

Gustav Böhm (born June 14, 1823 in Pest , Austrian Empire ; † June 23, 1878 in District IV , Budapest , Kingdom of Hungary ) was a Hungarian conductor , dramaturge and opera director .

Life

From the age of six, Gustav Böhm received music lessons. At the age of 13 he was already a violinist at the Deutsches Theater in Pest under the direction of Franz Erkel . He then attended the conservatory in Vienna . After his return to Pest he became a member of the ensemble at the Hungarian National Theater there . With a 12-man male choir from this theater, Böhm went on a concert tour that took him to Venice , Paris , Dresden , Leipzig and Schönbrunn (performing in front of the imperial family ). After his travels he took on the position of conductor at the Deutsches Theater in Pest.

After 1867 Böhm took over the position of choirmaster and conductor at the theater in Arad , then in Raab . In Arad he created the music for Emmerich Vahot's folk piece "Husarentrick". Böhm translated ten foreign language operas (including Richard Wagner's Lohengrin and Rienzi ) into Hungarian and performed Wagner operas in various Italian cities. He is also considered the founder of the Hungarian National Choral Society . Most recently he held the position of opera director at the Hungarian National Theater in Pest.
