Gustav Engel (musician)

Gustav Eduard Engel (born October 29, 1823 in Königsberg (Prussia) , † July 19, 1895 in Berlin ) was a German singer ( tenor ), music theorist , music teacher and journalist .

Life

After attending grammar school in Danzig , Gustav Engel studied philology at the University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1847. He then went to the Gray Monastery high school as a trial teacher in Berlin.

He already learned to play the piano in Danzig and also attended lectures on music while studying in Berlin. In 1843 Gustav Engel joined the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin and in 1846 became a member of the Royal Cathedral Choir , performing as a tenor soloist. After completing the probationary year as a teacher, he turned increasingly to the study of music theory. From 1853 he was "musical reporter" for the Spenersche Zeitung and from 1861 for the Vossische Zeitung . In 1863 he began working as a singing teacher at Theodor Kullak's Neue Akademie der Tonkunst and in 1874 he was appointed professor at the Royal Academy of Music in Berlin.

In addition, Gustav Engel wrote several music theory and music pedagogical works.
