Gustav Könnecke

Gustav Könnecke (born June 30, 1908 in Luckenwalde ; † October 17, 1992 in Holzweißig near Bitterfeld ) was a German arable and crop scientist . Since 1951, over two decades, he has decisively shaped the development of agricultural research at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg. He is considered the nestor of crop rotation research in Germany.

Live and act

Gustav Könnecke, son of a Reichsbahnamtmann, studied at the Agricultural University in Berlin from 1929 , switched to the University of Halle (Saale) in 1931 and received his doctorate there in 1935 with the dissertation "Investigations into the so-called settling of the soil". Under the aegis of his doctoral supervisor Theodor Roemer , he headed the Versuchsring Köthen from 1935 to 1943 .

After 1945, Könnecke was the head of the experimental farms at the University of Halle, who was responsible for agricultural research and at the same time worked as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Crop Production. In 1951 he completed his habilitation in Halle with the thesis "Increase in yield and preservation of soil fertility by changing crop rotations". In the same year he was appointed as the successor to Theodor Roemer as professor and director of the Institute for Arable and Plant Production at the University of Halle (Saale). He worked here until 1973.

In Köthen and after 1945, Könnecke carried out a large number of soil cultivation, fertilization and variety tests on the Noitzsch, Merbitz, Etzdorf, Mößlitz and Bärenrode university estates. However, the focus of his research activities were studies on the effects of crop rotation. The knowledge gained from the results of his long-term tests gave crop rotation research at home and abroad lasting impulses and also influenced crop rotation design in agricultural practice. For many years, Könnecke was chairman of the “Working Group on Crop Rotation” of the GDR Academy of Agricultural Sciences. His book “Crop rotations” (1967) has been translated into several languages and is one of the “classic works” in the field of arable and crop production.

A notable document on the history of crop science is Könnecke's contribution, published in 1952, entitled “Theodor Roemer and the Institute for Arable and Plant Production at the University of Halle”. Together with Hans Stubbe , Könnecke published the “ Kühn Archive ” from 1952 to 1971 .
