Karl Gustav Philipp Kratzmann (born February 13, 1812 in Kratzau ; † June 29, 1902 in Teplitz ) was a Bohemian painter , lithographer and restorer .

Life

Kratzmann studied from 1825 at the Prague Art Academy under Joseph Bergler . He then continued his studies in Dresden and Vienna. On January 13, 1836 he was enrolled at the Munich Academy . From 1838, Kratzmann went on study trips to Italy and the German states. He then worked as a painter in Prague and from 1840 presented his works at exhibitions in Dresden, Prague, Vienna and Paris. From 1846, Kratzmann trained as a restorer with Andreas Eigner .

The private society of patriotic art lovers in Prague appointed Kratzmann in 1852 to inspect their picture gallery. In 1858 Kratzmann went to Vienna and was appointed curator of his gallery by Prince Esterházy. Four years later he was appointed director of the Esterházy Gallery. In 1865 Kratzmann took over the management of the State Gallery in Pest . In 1880 he returned to Bohemia and took his retirement home in the spa town of Teplitz .

Kratzmann mainly created portraits and religious history pictures.

Gustav Kratzmann was married to Caroline Kunz, a daughter of the Bamberg publisher Carl Friedrich Kunz. His son Eduard worked as a glass painter. The writer Ernst Kratzmann was his grandson.
