Josef Bergler (born May 1, 1753 in Salzburg , † June 25, 1829 in Prague ) was a painter , etcher and director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague .

Life

Joseph Bergler completed his first training with his father, the sculptor Josef Bergler the Elder (1718, Berglgütchen , Windischmattrei - 1788, Passau ) in Passau in Lower Bavaria and then went to Milan and Rome for further training. In 1786 he returned to Passau as a cabinet painter at the prince-bishop's residence in Passau.

In 1800 he became director of the newly established Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. One of his most famous students was Joseph von Führich from Kratzau in northern Bohemia. One of his favorite students was Franz Nadorp , whose mentor he became.

He was succeeded by his adoptive son and proofreader Franz Christian Waldherr (October 27, 1784, Saatz - November 15, 1835, Prague).

Works

Numerous church pictures in Passau and the surrounding area in Lower Bavaria and neighboring Austria come from Bergler. Then he worked in Prague, the capital of Bohemia. He made paintings from the history of the country, etchings and portraits and in 1808 designed the tomb of Bishop Leopold Graf von Thun and Hohenstein in the cemetery of Prague's Lesser Town .
