Gustav Ludvig Wad , also GL Wad, (born August 28, 1854 in Seden near Odense ; died September 28, 1929 in Odense) was a Danish archivist and personnel historian .

Life

Wad was the son of the clergyman Matthias Wad (1816-1897) and his wife Marie Elisabeth (née Fistaine, 1824-1875). His first names were given to him after Gustav Ludvig Baden , his maternal grandfather, who worked as a historian and notary. Wad went to the Herlufsholm Latin School and began studying there from 1872. In 1877 he passed his examination in political science and became assistant to the postal inspectorate ( Danish assistant i Postinspektoratet for Østifterne ). Since 1879 he worked in the postal and telegraph service, where he became in 1881 Postexpedienten was appointed. He was now working as the postmaster's secretary. Subsequently, on April 1, 1893, he was appointed provincial archivist in the newly created archive in Funen. From 1907 to 1924 he headed the state archive. Just eight days after being made an honorary member of the Society for Danish Genealogy and Personal History, Wad passed away.

Since June 29, 1883 he was married to Edle Sophie Hedevig (nee d'Origny, 1856-1915). She was the daughter of the customs inspector (later head of the customs office in Korsør) Captain Frederick Julius d'Origny (1816–1888) and his second wife Edle Johanne Sophie Rasmine (née Cederfeld de Simonsen, 1821–1907). Previously he was married to Bertha Louise (nee Adler, 1816–1848). Wad had several brothers, Mathias Wad (* 1856), Christian Wad and Emmanuel Wad.

Works (selection)

In 1875 he published the announcements about graduates from Herlufsholm together with the senior teacher Albert Emil Leth. Other similar writings followed in 1878 and 1882. From 1883 to 1890 he worked in the editorial staff of the Personalhistorisk Tidsskrift . From 1885 until his transfer to Odense in 1893 he was also editor of the Kongelig Dansk Hof- og Statskalender .

Commitment and honors

  • On March 13, 1908, he joined the Royal Danish Society for the History of the Fatherland.
  • In 1908 he became a knight of Dannebrog and in 1918 he was appointed Dannebrogsmand
  • In 1929 he became an honorary member of the Society for Danish Genealogy and Personal History ( Danish Samfundet for dansk genealogi og personalhistorie )
