from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gustav Peter (* uncertain: 1833; † 1919 ) was the composer of the well-known piece of music Souvenir de Cirque Renz (German: "Memories of Circus Renz", also: "Memory of Circus Renz" and "Circus Renz-Galopp)".

Life

Little is known about the life of Gustav Peter. His year of birth is often given as 1833, his nationality occasionally as Hungarian or Austrian, but these unproven information cannot be considered certain. The name “Gustav Heinrich Peter” or “Heinrich Gustav Peter” is also given. Gustav Peter is often referred to as “G. Peter ”and therefore often confused with the composers Carl Peter and Georg Peter .

Beginning of the xylophone solo in Souvenir de Cirque Renz

Gustav Peter is the composer of the work Souvenir de Cirque Renz . This work is often dated to 1904, in fact Peter is mentioned as the composer already in November 1894, in the musical and literary monthly reports of Friedrich Hofmeister for sheet music for xylophone and orchestra of the publisher Otto soul . Souvenir de Cirque Renz has appeared on countless records since the beginning of the 20th century; it was arranged for other solo instruments and various accompaniments and is internationally known. It is just as popular as a work of circus music as it is as an entertaining and effective xylophone solo work.

The creation of the work falls at a time when fast dances like the gallop were popular in popular music, the xylophone was rediscovered as an instrument, and Circus Renz was very popular in Berlin. A number of Gustav Peters' contemporaries composed similar works, which today, however, have mostly been forgotten.
