Friedrich Hofmeister

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Hofmeister (born January 24, 1782 in Strehla , † September 30, 1864 in Reudnitz ) was a German publisher . In 1807 he opened a music store from which his own music publisher emerged in Leipzig . In the 1950s the publishing house became a state-owned company (VEB).

Archives of the publisher are located in the Saxon State Archives, Leipzig State Archives and form the holdings there.

Life

Hofmeister had acquired knowledge of publishing activities as an apprentice at Breitkopf & Härtel and then as an assistant in the Bureau de Musique , which had been founded in 1800 by Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754–1812) and Ambrosius Kühnel .

Friedrich Hofmeister advocated the general concerns of publishers and music dealers. He was a staunch advocate of copyright protection . At his instigation, the "Conventional Act" to protect against unauthorized reprinting was signed by all leading music publishers of the time in 1829 and the Association of Music Publishers Against Musical Reprint was founded, which later became the German Music Publishers Association (DMV). Friedrich Hofmeister became the association's secretary.

The name Hofmeister is also inextricably linked with the development of the German bibliography system : from 1819 onwards he first printed a few supplements to the handbook of musical literature first published by Carl Friedrich Whistling in 1817 , and - following on from this - he published the monthly musical and literary reports as well as from 1829 their summaries, the annual directories of music and music publications that were published until 1990 (from 1943 in partnership with the Deutsche Bücherei , Leipzig). Friedrich Hofmeister thus made Leipzig the center of music bibliography.

From the fourth edition onwards, the publisher published the songbook Der Zupfgeigenhansl , the 10th edition of which from 1913 is still the basis for reprints today.

In addition to his business contacts, Hofmeister built friendships with many composers that lasted for years; He gave young composers the chance to become known by publishing their early works.

Hofmeister laid out a botanical garden in Reudnitz, which he made accessible to the public. His son is the botanist Wilhelm Hofmeister (1824–1877), after whom Hofmeisterstraße in Leipzig is named. Like his son later, Friedrich Hofmeister was accepted into the Leipzig Freemason Lodge "Apollo" in 1825 .
