Carl Friedrich Whistling (born February 16, 1788 in Kelbra ; † September 2, 1855 in Vienna ) was a German music dealer and music bibliographer.

Life

Whistling's father was the doctor and pharmacist Christian Gottfried Whistling (1748–1807).

Carl Friedrich Whistling studied philology and camera science in Leipzig . From 1811 to 1821 he worked for Ambrosius Kühnel's publishing house Bureau de Musique , which passed into the possession of Carl Friedrich Peters in 1814 .

From 1821 to 1830 Whistling ran his own music shop in Leipzig, which he finally sold to Friedrich Hofmeister .

In 1817 Whistling published a handbook of musical literature for the first time , which was continued from 1829 by the Friedrich Hofmeister publishing house. The reference work, which is of fundamental importance to this day, initially appeared anonymously. It was not until the 2nd edition in 1828 that “CF Whistling” was named as editor and publisher.

From 1835 he probably lived in Hamburg for some time , at the latest in 1847 he moved to Vienna , where he got a job at Carl Haslinger's publishing house . A cause of death is not given in the official Wiener Zeitung .
