Gustav Pomberger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gustav Pomberger (born May 27, 1949 in Gosau , Austria ) is an Austrian computer scientist . He was Professor of Practical Computer Science at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz and headed the Institute for Business Information Systems - Software Engineering .

Life

After training as electrical engineering - engineering Gustav Pomberger was from 1968 worked as a design engineer for electric machines up to 1976, studied in addition to his professional activities, computer science and graduated in 1975 Natural Sciences Technical and on the faculty of the Johannes Kepler University as a graduate engineer. After eight years in industry, he returned to the university. He became a research assistant to Professor Peter Rechenberg , with whom he received his doctorate. In 1982 he spent a research semester with Professor Niklaus Wirth , the designer of the programming languages Pascal , Modula-2 and Oberon , at the ETH Zurich , which shaped his future career . In 1984 he was appointed assistant professor for computer science at the University of Zurich (1984 to 1987) and in 1987 professor for software engineering at the Johannes Kepler University Linz (1987 to current). Further appointments: 1987 to the ETH Zurich (chair for algorithms for new computer architectures), 1990 to the University of Regensburg (chair for business informatics), 1991 to the Technical University of Vienna (chair for software technology). Together with Professor Lutz Heinrich, he set up the institute and the business informatics course at Johannes Kepler University. From 1992 to 1999 he headed the Christian Doppler Research Laboratory for Methods and Tools in Software Engineering and since 1988 the Institute for Information Systems - Software Engineering at the JKU. In 1999 Pomberger was appointed Senior Fellow of the Christian Doppler Research Association.

Until 2017 he was a professor at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz and a lecturer at the FH Hagenberg in the field of algorithms and data structures .

From 2018 to 2023 he is chairman of the University Council of the University of Artistic and Industrial Design Linz .

Main focus of work and research

Even during his industrial activity, Pomberger dealt with the automation of calculation and design processes in electrical engineering . In his dissertation, he designed a formal language to describe construction processes and a method for generating software. In his habilitation thesis he discussed basic concepts for the systematic construction of complex software systems. In terms of research methodology, he pursues an engineering-based approach, i.e. a development from the exemplary, construction-centered and descriptive to the fundamental, abstract, explanatory, i.e. H. from practice to theory.

In the software engineering department , he mainly deals with the development of concepts, methods, processes and tools

  • for the design, analysis and evaluation of software architectures,
  • for the design, analysis and evaluation of user interfaces,
  • for planning, controlling and monitoring software development processes,
  • to increase productivity and quality in the manufacture of software products and
  • for the development of software engineering strategies.

In the Department of Economics computer science , the focus is on the development of concepts, methods, processes and tools

  • to increase productivity and quality in the development and use of information technology,
  • to use information as a production factor,
  • to assess the effectiveness and economy (efficiency) of the development and use of information technology,
  • for the development of new information and communication technologies and
  • to open up new, information technology-based areas of application.
