Gustav Ludwig Georg Friedrich Simon (born February 5, 1811 in Gronau near Bensheim, † May 13, 1870 in Michelstadt ) was a German Protestant pastor, dean and historian .

Gustav Simon was a son of the pastor, consistorial councilor and church inspector Georg Friedrich Simon (* 1772 in Darmstadt , † 1832 in Bad König ). When he died in 1870 at the age of 59, he left behind his wife Emilie, née. Ammann and 10 children.

Life

Simon initially received his basic school education from his father at home. From 1825 to 1828 he attended high school in Darmstadt. He then studied from Easter 1828 at the Ludwig University of Giessen, the subject of Protestant theology . During his studies in 1828 he became a member of the old Gießen fraternity Germania . In May 1834 he passed the final exam in Darmstadt. He was ordained on December 14, 1834 in Rimbach , where he was appointed parish administrator. Simon stayed here for 4 years before he was appointed court preacher to the Count of Erbach-Schönberg in Schönberg on September 18, 1838 . In 1842 he was appointed pastor in Vielbrunn , where he stayed for 10 years and began his historical research for the first time. On the basis of this, Simon quickly made a name for himself as a historian. This was probably one of the reasons why he was finally given the coveted position as first pastor in Michelstadt in 1852 and after several petitions from Count Alfred von Erbach-Fürstenau was appointed senior pastor on September 28, 1852 . At the end of July 1862, Grand Duke Ludwig III. additionally the administration of the dean's office in Erbach. Simon held this office until his death in 1870.

Work and awards

Gustav Simon stands as a historian of the Odenwald and above all of the former county of Erbach in the scope and diversity of his work. A Protestant clergyman by profession, his passion was historical research and writing . So he wrote countless works between 1854 and 1865, z. Some of them are the basis of regional historical research in the Odenwald in the 20th and 21st centuries. His main work, "The History of the Dynasts and Counts of Erbach and their Country", was published in 1858 in Frankfurt am Main. In addition, Simon wrote numerous works that reach far beyond the borders of the Odenwald. Despite the often difficult prerequisites, Simon always managed to inspire financiers for his work and ultimately to publish it ready for printing.
