Gustave Wappers
Egide Charles Gustave Wappers (born August 23, 1803 in Antwerp , † December 6, 1874 in Paris ) was a Belgian painter.
Wappers received his first artistic training at the art academy in his hometown; there he was mainly a student of the painters Mathieu Ignace van Brée and Guillaume Jacques Herreyns (1743-1827). Afterwards Wappers lived and worked for some time in Paris to learn specifically by copying the old masters (in the Louvre ). According to his own statements, he was most influenced by Jacob Jordaens and Peter Paul Rubens , among others .
At the age of 27, Wappers had his artistic breakthrough in 1830 with a monumental painting depicting the mayor van der Werf of Leiden, offering his corpse to the starved people during the siege of the city by the Spaniards and calling on them to sin. Wappers thus became the initiator to deal artistically with the history of the country. Over time, a small group of artists formed around Wappers.
In 1832 Wappers was appointed professor, a year later he was elected an honorary member ( NA Honorary ) of the National Academy of Design in New York and in 1840 he was entrusted with the management of the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Lawrence Alma-Tadema is one of his most important students . In 1845 King Leopold I. appointed Wappers as official court painter. In the following year, Wappers was promoted to President of the Belgian National Museum ; he held this office until 1853.
On the occasion of his 44th birthday, Wappers received the rank of baron from King Leopold I and was raised to the rank of personal nobility.
In 1859, Wappers settled in Paris as a freelance artist for the rest of his life. There he died at the age of 71 on December 6, 1874.
