Ferdinand Plessner

Ferdinand Pleßner (born October 7, 1824 in Erfurt , † November 2, 1895 in Gotha ; full name: Gustav Wilhelm Ferdinand Pleßner ) was a German civil engineer and railway contractor .

Life

Ferdinand Pleßner was the son of a captain and teacher at the regimental school in Erfurt.

Plessner attended secondary school in Erfurt , which he graduated from Easter 1842. Thereafter, Pleßner did his military service as a one-year volunteer with a pioneer battalion in Erfurt. At the grammar school in Nordhausen Pleßner acquired the Abitur , in order to then study civil engineering at the Berlin building academy . In 1848, after passing the first state examination, he was appointed construction manager ( trainee lawyer in public construction). The first projects were roads and bridges in Berlin. From 1849 to 1852 he was also involved in the construction of the Prussian Eastern Railway (Berlin – Königsberg). In May 1852 Pleßner passed the second state examination and was appointed (royal) master builder ( assessor in public construction). In the same year Pleßner married. The marriage resulted in two sons and three daughters.

Pleßner was employed as a railway builder in Posen in 1853 , later Pleßner a. a. involved in the construction of the left Rhine route near Koblenz . The responsible Prussian ministry did not approve a position as a town planning officer in the city of Posen, but he left the Prussian civil service at his own request. He went on a study trip to France , which took him to Paris and Bordeaux .

After his return, Pleßner took over railway construction independently. For the Prussian State Railway and other clients, Pleßner managed the construction of lines in Pomerania , Silesia and the Thuringian states . During the German War of 1866 Pleßner was entrusted with the construction of field railways and clearing work. After the war, Pleßner managed the construction of the new Prussian war port in Heppens , which was then called Wilhelmshaven .

In 1870 the "Saxonia" iron works and railway supplies factory was founded in Radeberg with his participation .

In March 1870, Pleßner co-founded the construction company for railway companies F. Plessner & Comp. and became one of the general partners and directors. This company worked in particular for railway companies in the Thuringian states, Saxony and Prussia . As a result of the start-up crisis , however, she soon ran into economic difficulties. In January 1875 it went bankrupt. Soon after, Ferdinand Plessner, who was liable for the company's liabilities with all of his private fortune, was insolvent.

Pleßner received the title of senior building officer from Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Gotha . In Gotha, Pleßner was elected city ​​councilor in 1884 and senator in 1887 . There he made lasting merits in setting up electrical lighting and building the electric tram .
