history

During the Thirty Years' War , the Armée de l'Allemagne camped here under Turenne in the summer before they set off north on August 3, 1644 - the first day of the Battle of Freiburg, to the fighting on the Bohl near Ebringen and their attack on the Bavarian positions had the most losing battles of this war.

Viticulture

The Batzenberg is the largest closed vineyard and the largest closed Gutedellage in Germany with a cultivation area of 376 ha. Viticulture has been practiced here since Roman times, it has been documented since 716. In terms of viticulture, it is assigned to four areas of the Baden wine-growing region , the Markgräflerland , the southern Black Forest , the Staufen Bay and the Breisgau . In the past, the area was cultivated by the St. Gallen monks, later under Margrave Karl Friedrich , the Gutedel vine from Lake Geneva was introduced here in 1780 , which is now the dominant vine here. The current shape of the Batzenberg is a result of the gradual land consolidation from 1949 to 1979. Before that, in addition to viticulture, there were mainly small forests, fruit growing and arable farming on the ridge, and it was used by families for their own needs. Due to the division of the estate , the ridge was divided into small parcels terraced with stone walls, these were hardly developed with paths and therefore only manageable with effort. Viticulture was also threatened by phylloxera and only the planting of resistant varieties helped. After the Second World War , winegrowers' cooperatives were founded to help the winegrowers. The Batzenberg was one of the first vineyard-approved areas in Baden and therefore a model region for new viticulture beyond the national borders.

tourism

Grafted Memorial

A 5 km long educational wine path has been set up for tourism, which explains the wine industry and the typical grape varieties on boards, the striking points include the grafted vines monument from 1976 and the stone carving cross - named after its builder Johann Eckerle Steinhauer - from 1847. The high trail on the ridge is 4 km long and almost flat, this agricultural road is handicapped accessible and allows a very good view of both the Rhine plain and the Black Forest due to the lack of forest. Another hiking trail leading over the Batzenberg is the Markgräfler Wiiwegli , a long-distance hiking trail run by the Black Forest Association that starts in Freiburg and ends in Weil am Rhein .

Rail tunnel

In August 2019 it became known that Deutsche Bahn wanted to build a tunnel through the Batzenberg. This should bypass the curve of the Rhine Valley Railway around the mountain and thus enable speeds of up to 200 km / h. Test drilling is planned for autumn 2019, the preliminary planning is to be completed by 2022, the planning approval procedure to start by 2029 and construction to start in 2031 and be completed in 2038.
