Gustav Winkler (born May 11, 1867 in Liegnitz , Province of Silesia , † April 26, 1954 in Berlin ) was a German textile manufacturer and patron , especially of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society .

Life

Winkler's father was a farmer. He attended school in Liegnitz and then completed an apprenticeship in his uncle's textile business. In 1909 he founded his first handkerchief factory, Gustav Winkler Textilwerke , and by 1939 he expanded the business to a total of 13 factories, all of which were located in what was then Silesia , including in Lauban . The textile works developed into the largest company in Lauban; at the same time, 95% of all German handkerchiefs were produced in Lauban before the Second World War.

Winkler was a sponsor of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society (KWG): from 1929 until his death he was a "supporting member", first of the KWG, and later of the successor institution, the Max Planck Society . From 1935 to 1951 he was senator of the KWG and from 1937 to 1951 2nd secretary of the KWG. He was also a member of various boards of trustees of institutes of the KWG and also a member of the board of directors of the Harnack House in Berlin-Dahlem.

The companies in Silesia were lost after the Second World War. Winkler acquired the Lauffenmühle in Tiengen near Waldshut as early as 1935 . After 1945, a total of six handkerchief factories were built in southern and western Germany, including Gustav Winkler KG Berlin, the handkerchief factory in Bielefeld-Aalen and the mechanical handkerchief weaving mill in Blumberg / Baden.

Streets in Bielefeld and Unterlauchringen are named after Gustav Winkler. He was married and had two sons, the son Helmut Winkler took over the business of the Winkler Group.
