Training and style

Initially (from 1871) von Bechtolsheim was a student at the Royal Academy of the Arts in Munich under the genre painter Karl Theodor von Piloty , who later became the most important representative of realistic history painting . Von Bechtolsheim later specialized in landscape and mood painting at the academy , influenced by his teacher Adolf Lier . His motifs come from southern Germany, its foothills, especially from Upper Bavaria. Atmospheric landscapes of the Chiemsee , the Starnberger See , the Inn and Isar valleys were created . Initially, his works were still shaped in the style of the Wilhelminian tradition, from the turn of the century his painterly depiction and the effect of his pictures on the viewer became more generous and thus crossed the threshold to impressionism .
