Life

Gustave Léonard de Jonghe was born to the painter Jan Baptiste de Jonghe in Kortrijk, Belgium. First he received painting lessons from his father before he moved to Brussels to study. His father died at the age of 15, after which he received a scholarship from his hometown. From 1848 he took part in the exhibitions of the Brussels Salon. At first he mainly created portraits before he increasingly devoted himself to depicting women of the upper class.

Around 1860 de Jonghe moved to Paris, where he became a popular painter of elegant women and group portraits of the bourgeoisie. He mostly preferred interior depictions in which numerous fashionable details of the time can be found. In the 1870s, the artist commuted repeatedly between Paris and Brussels. His artistic career ended when he became blind around 1882. De Jonghe died on January 28, 1893 in Antwerp.
