The good gray is a variety of the pear ( Pyrus communis ), a broad, robust table pear. It is a very old variety and was known before 1675. The exact origin and development of the variety is unknown. From the 18th century it was imported from France as Beurre gris .

Synonyms: 'Beurre gris', 'Graue Sommerbutterbirne', 'Graubirne', 'Grisbirne', 'Schöne Gabriele', 'Sommer-Ambrette'.

tree

The good gray grows very strongly and forms a very large crown on the seedling base , which becomes wide and high. The variety can get unusually old. The variety is mainly used as a high and half trunk; Slowly growing substrates are possible, but of no importance. There are only minor requirements; the variety can be cultivated on most soils, up to mountain locations with an altitude of about 700 m.

Fertility occurs late on seedling stocks (not before the tenth year of standing); there is then a clear tendency towards alternation .

blossom

The flowering is early and somewhat sensitive to the weather. Noah's Ark describes the good gray as a triploid variety and therefore useless as a pollen donor ; however, it is listed as a good pollen donor by W. Votteler and F. Mühl. The pollinator varieties are ' Clapps Liebling ', ' Gellert 's Butter Pear ', ' Countess of Paris ', ' Gute Luise ', ' Madame Verté ', ' Esperens Bergamotte ', ' Boscs Bottle Pear '.

fruit

The fruit is inconspicuous, small to medium-sized, the skin is hard and rough. The basic color is first green, later yellowish green, at the ripening time almost completely rusty cinnamon brown; the brownish-red, washed-out body color is rarely seen. The peel points are numerous, large and gray-white.

The flesh is matt white to yellowish white, melting and juicy, somewhat grainy towards the core, sour-sweet, very pleasantly spiced with cinnamon and fragrant. According to Wilhelm Lauche , it is particularly suitable for drying .

Maturity

The early autumn variety can be harvested from late August to mid-September; the fruits hang firmly on the tree. The maturity is limited by the short shelf life of only two weeks. Therefore, dividing the harvest into individual waves is advantageous.

Vulnerabilities

The good gray is described as resistant to diseases and pests. However, there is a strong susceptibility to pear rust , moderate susceptibility to fire blight and low susceptibility to scab .
